2015-16 Upper Deck Series 2 Hockey Hobby Box
Box of 24 packs
Pack of 8 cards
The second installment of the NHL's flagship product, Upper Deck's 2015-16 Series 2 Hockey Hobby Box picks up where Series 1 left off. Featuring Jack Eichel's Young Guns rookie card, each hobby box promises a commemorative card.
The 200-card base set is once again the precursor to the famous Young Guns subset. The 50 base rookies are presented in 1:4 packs, and the checklist includes Noah Hanifin and Jake Virtanen in addition to Eichel. Parallels for the entire base set include familiar options like Exclusives (#/100), High Gloss (#/10) and Printing Plates (1/1).
With an average of four per box (1:6 packs), UD Canvas includes a mix of subjects. With Connor McDavid, Young Guns UD Canvas are a little rarer, with 1:48 packs. UD Portraits is a 50-card deck that includes only first-time players and is dealt four per box (1:6 decks). Platinum Gold (#/99) and Platinum Blue (#/25) parallels are rarer for Portraits.
The popular Day with the Cup insert returns with high odds of 1:2 500 packs. Offering the boldest design, Rookie Breakouts are limited to 100 copies and feature a die-cut acetate design.
Collectors will find Rookie Materials or UD Game Jersey relic cards in every hobby box. There are also patch versions of both, with Rookie Materials patches limited to 25 copies and UD Game Patch cards numbered to 15. The 1,000-point Club jerseys are also highly prized, at one in every 864 packs.
Although more limited, several signed cards offer more collector success. UD signatures and O-Pee-Chee signatures both appear in a ratio of 1:576. The autographed 1,000-point Club jerseys are among the rarest, with a print run of just ten.
Enhancing several earlier sets or inserts, Series 2 features few updates. The O-Pee-Chee update offers 50 new cards, including 40 options for recruits that fall into 1:6 decks. Ordinary OPC Update cards average one per box. Rainbow Foil, Red Border and Black Border parallels (#/100) are added to the totals. More options come in the form of O-Pee-Chee Retro Updates which fall 1:12 packs overall.
It's important to note that Upper Deck's Series 2 will also be issued as part of Upper Deck's e-Pack platform. No additional cards will be produced, but part of the series will be set aside for the e-Pack. Although the date has not yet been set, Upper Deck has stated that they intend to "provide our brick-and-mortar retailers with a window before e-Pack begins". The earliest release date for e-Pack S2 is March 17, 2016.
