After a successful university career, Caufield made his NHL debut as an emergency call-up in 2021. He quickly became the third NHL player in history to score his first two career overtime goals, and eventually appeared in twenty games, with four goals and eight assists, in the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The 40 goals he scored in his first 100 games are the fourth most by a Canadiens player in the last ninety years, and he holds the record for the most overtime points scored by a Canadiens rookie in a playoff year. Caufield was named NHL Rookie of the Month for March 2022.
